I believe the world needs more stories about good overcoming evil.

(And more stories with dragons would be great as well.)

I’ve believed in magical worlds for as long as I can remember. As a kid, my backyard was a portal to other realms. I saw magic in every flower. That tree was but a trick of the light away from being an Ent. That bush held a secret world, I was sure of it.

This sense of wonder was fueled by the stories I read: Stories about a talking lion who was good and true. Stories about a hobbit who was brave even though he had every reason not to be. These stories (and their messages of hope) left an indelible mark on me.

This is why I equip writers like you to tell their stories well: Because I’m committed to putting more stories into the world with messages of hope and belief in things unseen.

Why I Became a Book Coach

I came to book coaching because I learned three things in my own writing practice that I wanted to share with other writers. 1. I wasn’t born knowing how to tell a great story--but it was possible to learn how. 2. The reason I struggled to write wasn’t what I thought it was. It wasn’t because I needed more discipline or didn’t want it bad enough. It was because I didn’t know how to write the story I wanted to write. 3. If I wanted to become a published writer, I had to learn how to write a good story and take ownership of my dream. And if I did that—owned my dream and took steps to pursue it—there was every reason to hope that my dreams would one day become reality.

And that’s exactly what I want to help you do.

I want you to:

—Learn what makes a story great.

—Claim your dream of becoming a published writer and take action to make it happen.

—Find joy in your writing practice and in your story again.

I want to be the C.S. Lewis to your Tolkien.

My hope is that you find resources, support, and encouragement here. I currently only offer coaching services during the summer (for a list of Summer 2022 packages, click here!), so if you’re stopping by during a different season, just know that even though it gets quite during the school year, I’m still here supporting and cheering for you! Slogging (and rejoicing!) through the writing of the words.

In case you’re curious, here’s my street cred:

  • I have a BA in English from the University of Arizona with a focus in literature. My courses were HEAVY in literary analysis and that has fueled my love of story analysis and my ability to separate the pieces of a story and see how they are working together.

  • I’ve been working as a book coach since 2017 and have coached over three dozen writers since then.

  • I have four years (and counting!) of experience teaching high school English which gives me lots of practice providing feedback to writers in a way that was encouraging, inspiring, and effective.

  • I worked for Author Accelerator as a book coach for two years and was one of the founding coaches over there—trust me when I say they thoroughly vet their coaches.

  • I eat story structure for breakfast and analyze this stuff for fun on my days off. I can’t get enough. I’ve coached several writers through Author Accelerator’s Story Genius course (the only place where you can get certified Story Genius coaching other than from Lisa herself). I also love Jennie Nash’s inside outline and the Save the Cat Writes a Novel method. I’m always reading and learning more about story—reading new books, taking new courses, and trying out new methods on my own novels.

As seen on TV! Er, I mean these other awesome sites:

You should probably know…

~ I love homemade mac and cheese with tabasco sauce

~ I’m a Hufflepuff. We’re the most underrated house and our common room is like a hobbit hole. Also we are nice. What’s better than that?

~ I love anything British: Benedict Cumberbatch, Harry Potter, Sherlock Holmes, Jane Austen, tea in real teacups, double decker busses, Heinz beans, Charles Dickens. (If you are still reading this list, I heart you.)

And also (on a serious note…)

~ I’m forever in awe of the way Jesus pours his love and grace on me even when I run so hard in the opposite direction.

~ I’m married to my best friend and we have a daughter who fills our life with laughter and makes us a family.

~ It took me years to embrace my calling to be a writer and to start seriously pursuing that dream. Now I want to make sure that every writer who crosses my path is pointed down the path of really going for it this time.

Working with Ashly was great because I could tell she really understands and cares about what it feels like to be a writer struggling to actually write.
